A first-principles derivation procedure for wake-body models in vortex-induced vibration: Proof-of-concept

چکیده
A generalized variational equation based on the extended Hamilton’s principle is presented as the starting point for a procedure from which wake-body models for the two-dimensional vortex-induced vibration of a cylinder can be derived. The case of an elastically mounted cylinder with a transverse degree-of-freedom in a uniform flow is offered as a ‘‘model problem’’ through which this derivation procedure is illustrated. A number of wake-body models from the literature are shown to be recoverable from the more general model derived here. The correspondence with these ‘‘classical’’ models is presented as evidence of the feasibility of incorporating this methodology into vortex-induced vibration modeling. Unlike these comparison models, however, which are often assigned an ad hoc form, any assumptions made in arriving at the derived wake-body model are explicitly stated. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. A Model for Runway Landing Flow and Capacity with Risk and Cost Benefit Factors
As the demand for the civil aviation has been growing for decades and the system becoming increasingly complex, the use of systems engineering and operations research tools have shown to be of further use in managing this system. In this study, we apply such tools in managing landing operations on runways (as the bottleneck and highly valuable resources of air transportation networks) to handle...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of the Incompressible Laminar Flow Over a Square Cylinder
Simulation of fluid flow over a square cylinder can be performed in order to understand the physics of the flow over bluff bodies. In the current study, incompressible laminar flow over a confined square cylinder, with variable blockage factor has been simulated numerically, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The focus has been on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of the cylinder. Vorticity...
متن کاملExperimental Study of Vortex Shapes behind a Wing Equipped with Different Winglets
An extensive experimental study is conducted to examine effects of different winglet-shapes and orientations on the vortex behind a wing, static surface pressure over the wing, and wing wake of a swept wing at various angles of attack. Four types of winglets, spiroid (forward and aft), blended, and winggrid are used in this investigation. Wing static surface pressure measurements are obtained f...
متن کاملInvestigation of vortex-induced vibration phenomenon in verticallong circular slender structure with non-uniform flows
Analyzing the vortex-induced vibration of a slender marine structure withlength to diameter ratio up to 200 is the objective of this study. This slender is free to move in both in-line and cross flow directions and immersed completely in water. Three different types of shear currents pass on it and cause to vibrate slender in different forms. Nowadays, these vibrations are very important for de...
متن کاملNote on the induced Lagrangian drift and added-mass of a vortex
Darwin (1953) introduced a simple heuristic that relates the Lagrangian fluid drift induced by a solid body propagating in irrotational flow to its virtualor added-mass. The force required to accelerate the solid body must also overcome this added-mass. An extension of Darwin’s (1953) method to the case of vortices propagating in a real fluid is described here. Experiments are conducted to demo...
